Jazlyn Tovar's Story

The Se Vale Soñar Scholarship is seeking to award its first scholarship reception, Jazlyn Tovar, this summer. Jazlyn is a high school senior at Atrisco Heritage Academy High School. She has good grades: all A’s and B’s. She is also involved in the Fashion Club at school, and helps to translate from Spanish to English for people in the community. She seeks to break statistics, barriers, and stereotypes. Jazlyn will be the first person in her family to graduate from high school and pursue a higher education. In the fall of 2018, she will be attending the University of New Mexico. She is seeking to become a radiologist and to help Spanish speaking patients in the healthcare field. However, pursuing this goal will prove to be difficult as she does not have access to a personal laptop.

Jazlyn, like many first-generation college students, needs a laptop for college. She has been using computers at her school and in public libraries to apply to scholarships and do her work so far. Unfortunately, she has to rely on the certain hours that the library has to do her assignments. Her family is financially unable to purchase a laptop for her as her father is the sole provider of the family. Working in the construction industry, which is typically susceptible to unstable working hours, her father cannot afford to buy Jazlyn a laptop. If you have ever been a college student, you will understand the situation: a laptop is a necessity.

In college, it is essential to have your own laptop to complete assignments and homework in classes and outside of classes. The Se Vale Soñar Scholarship was created to help students, like Jazlyn, first generation, Latino/a, low-income students pursue a high education and ease the financial burden of buying a laptop during high school and college. Jazlyn is the perfect example of a hardworking student who needs the support of her community to meet her goals and dreams.

Right now, we are asking for support to buy Jazlyn a laptop for college by donating to our scholarship. Any donation will have an immense impact on her life and so many others like Jazlyn in a similar situation. Click here to visit the Se Vale Soñar Scholarship. You can also read more about the scholarship, its goals and inspiration, as well as statements about the importance of having a laptop from current college students.

Jazlyn on the importance of having a laptop:

“To begin with, I have a big future planned ahead of me, which is full of positivity and motivation. My biggest goal is to make my parents proud and let them know how capable I am. I want to prove them wrong by graduating from high school first, since my two older brothers weren't able to graduate from high school. My parents aren’t very aware of how scholarships work or what graduating from high school is like. Having the opportunity to show my parents a different experience from my brothers past academics, has made me have the honor to demonstrate them what it's like to love school and to start new chapters. Their support and motivation are the ones that have helped me accomplish many things and helped me to keep going with my life. My next goal is to graduate from high school and proceed to college. I want to attend the University of New Mexico to major in Radiology. I have had a passion to become a radiologist since a couple years ago, due to a project that was assigned to me by my physics class. Becoming a radiologist means a lot to me because I will have a career and an amazing job to move forward with my life and help my parents economically. Since I'm bilingual, I'm proud of speaking Spanish and English because I can translate to those families that have trouble speaking Spanish or understanding English. My goal is to make a change in the hospital environment by helping people feel comfortable with their language.

Getting a laptop would mean a lot to me and my parents because I'm the first member of my family to graduate and receive help to attend college. Having a laptop will help me in college to complete any assignments that will be assigned to me online and I will stop having to go to the public libraries to type any essays, homework, etc. I think it's necessary to own a laptop in college because as I've been informed, a lot of things are handled online other than in person. I believe a laptop will make my life a little easier in college and I will have something less to worry about. In my household, my father is the only one who works and takes care of any utilities needed. My father works in construction, which isn’t a stable job for him, due to sometimes not being called in. His job varies on the seasons, sometimes there's a lot of work and sometimes there isn’t as much. When there isn’t as much work, he gets sent home and most of the time it takes about a week for his boss to call him back in. It’s very stressing and frustrating for my dad when this occurs because he worries about not getting enough hours and money in his paycheck. He also doesn't get the same hours every week, sometimes he makes more hours than the usual, but that’s only when there's a big project being constructed. The only financial support that my family and I receive, is my father's salary. My father and my mother motivate me to not get frustrated with my dreams and to keep going with my academics to attend college.”
